Duties and Responsibilities:

The incumbent is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County in its mission to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision to be the Healthiest State in the Nation. The incumbent, an employee of the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County, represents the agency, its mission and values. As part of the global public health organization, (s)he is expected to promote cooperation, courtesy, and teamwork in a diverse environment.   Selected immunizations are a required prerequisite for this position (MMWR Vol. 46/No. RR-18). Periodic screening for Tuberculosis is also required. This job involves risk of exposure to TB and/or bloodborne pathogens and requires access to transportation.

 

Integrated Clinic Support:  This position provides Practical Nursing services to patients in the clinic for the Immunization Program and other programs as needed. Assures that vaccines are administered as specified by established clinical protocols and in accordance with applicable federal, state and local immunization program eligibililty and utilization policies and procedures.  These programs and guidelines include, but are not limited to:  the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program; adult vaccines; Rabies; INS; Refugee vaccines; travel vaccines and other CHD purchased vaccines; storage and organization of vaccines within the CHD, including the maintenance of cold-chain custody.

 

This employee will be cross-trained to work in various other clinics including INS, family planning, STD and communicable disease.  Duties will include but may not be limited to: obtaining objective and subjective health histories; performing measurements of height, weight and hemoglobin; taking/reviewing immunization status; determining contraindications to immunizations; issuing Immunization certificates; education; administration of oral and injectable vaccines and biologicals; screening and testing for tuberculosis; HIV pre and post test counseling; documenting and coding at the time of service; providing Family Planning education in schools and other community locations as needed; performing standardized screening for hearing and vision; reconciling vaccine inventory with Florida Shots, and monitoring refrigerator and freezer temperatures.   May take confidential information into the field, or generate confidential information while in the field as part of their normal activities.  Ensures that  clients are registered into the HMS system and Florida Shots; inputs immunization histories, vaccines and activities into the HMS and Fl shots system while the client is present.  Appropriatley uses Q-Flow. 

 

 

Nursing Mentorship: Under the direction of Nursing leadership, provides orientation and mentorship activities to nursing staff in the integrated direct service clinic.  Specific duties will include the provision of support and training of new staff and students in the integrated service delivery clinic, including but not limited to: program specific nursing service delivery requirements, HMS entry of visit nursing notes and service delivery coding, use of program specific templates as applicable, and use of the Q-Flow appointment and service delivery tracking system.

  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices and techniques

  • Ability to effectively teach principles and practices of healthy lifestyles.
  • Ability to correctly interpret and explain lab results.
  • Ability to administer parenteral injections.
  • Ability to administer and interpret PPD's; maintains certification if available at MCHD.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to creatively and effectively solve problems.
  • Ability to organize and carry out one's work schedule in cooperation with other team members/programs.
  • Must have basic computer skills.
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferable.

 

Licensure/registration/certification requirements (If applicable, list the appropriate Florida Statute or federal regulation cite):

  • Valid Florida LPN License
  • Valid Florida Driver's License and access to reliable transportation
  • CPR certification must be obtained within 1 month of hire and HIV Testing/Counseling Certification must be obtained within 3 months of hire and must be maintained throughout the course of employment.

  • Emergency Duty: Incumbent may be required to work before, during and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. Emergency duty required of the incumbent includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
